RIM is know to scoop up domain names to protect their brand. Luckily RIM has been very good to most of the BlackBerry community when it comes to domain names. However it seems that RIM has just taken over two domains which could provide insight to some of their future projects. The first one is BlackPad.com, which if you remember BlackPad was the code name for the rumored BlackBerry Tablet. While we don’t think this would be RIM’s first choice for a product name, they still want to own the domain name. Recently RIM also acquired BlackBerryTorch.com and BlackBerry9800.com, which would lead you to think that RIM’s slider device will be at least modeled the 9800, and possibly even called BlackBerry Torch. RIM has even acquired BlackBerry9780.com, which would of course be for the new upgraded Bold 9700 model.

So what do you think of RIM nabbing up all these domains? Is it a sign of products to come? or is RIM just holding down their property?

Infonetics Research, an industry analyst firm, projects the mobile client security market to grow by more than $1 billion by 2014. Here’s the details…

We’ve been huge promoters of SMobile Systems Security Shield because they have the top security mobile software available to mobile devices for both enterprises and consumers alike. They are a privately held software company based in Ohio, headquartered in the US. They are the leading experts and innovators in the mobile market, which is their focus, and have been doing it since they were founded in 2002. Their focus has included AntiVirus, Firewall, AntiSpam, AntiTheft, Identity Protection, Enterprise controls, and protection for children with mobile devices. I first started following them since the Etisalat incident and am extremely impressed in the software which has proven tried and true. Their product portfolio protects mobile devices running on Android, Apple iOS (iPhones and iPads alike), BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile OS.

Juniper Networks began with top of the line secured routers and grew from there. The company is designed to cover everything from devices to data centers, and consumers to the cloud. They have acquired various technologies and companies. They currently maintain more than 30, 000 customers and partners worldwide. They will integrate the SMobile technology into their Junos® Pulse, an innovative software platform that brings ubiquitous connectivity, security and acceleration to smart phones, tablets, netbooks and notebooks, according to the press release.

The transaction in closing in estimated at around $70 million dollars. With SMobile whose mission has been to secure, manage, and control all mobile devices, ensuring the internet you hold in your hand is secure and reliable incorporated into Juniper Network’s worldwide base and secure technology, it should prove to be prepared for the advances in technology that are ahead.

Technology is advancing, and while some devices are more secure than others, being prepared is a smart move. Your smartphone is a mobile device that has the capability of a small laptop with voice. Your information is sensitive data, so securing it makes sense.

For more information on the companies and the SMobile products, the following links are available.

Check out the SMobile Systems Security Software here

One of the things I love is that for only $29.99 a year you can have complete assurance that your phone and information are secure. I’ve tested it on the dashboard, tested it on the handset, and tested it against the top malware/spyware available to the BlackBerry. It’s stealth. Protect what’s yours, you wouldn’t run your pc without security software would you?

What are your thoughts on mobile security? Do you subscribe to any type of mobile security? If so or if not, please share what you use and why, or why you don’t. I’d like to know how many of us out there truly think about it.

When I got the email I had to admit I was really intrigued. I’ve tried self destructive text apps before, but none were free. The point of it is to have a text that can self-destruct in a time limit that you set. TigerText is available in the BlackBerry App World for free. What is TigerText exactly?

The description of TigerText is as follows:

TigerText is the hottest new texting software that keeps text messages private and secure. TigerText is a smart-phone application that allows users to exchange text messages that disappear after a set period. When it’s gone, it’s gone. If people text like they talk, some things are just taken out of context which may come back to haunt them. Not anymore…

TigerText allows users to send text messages that delete off both the senders’ and receiver’s phone after a set period of time. Once a sender selects the text lifespan, expired text messages not only delete from both phones, but are not stored on any server. They cannot be retrieved. TigerText users select the amount of time that a message will exist – from 1 minute up to 30 days after receipt – after which the message will disappear forever.

I downloaded the TigerText application to my BlackBerry Bold 9650. The last application like this was SMS Eraser. When you download the application it asks you to set up your account so that you can use it. It even has a text message practice to show you how to use the application. After answering back with the quick messages that teach you how to start using it.

Here’s the way that it works for those interested. You’ll have an inbox after learning by the messages that gave you a quick practice run. To create the text, you first click your Menu button and you choose the Settings. You’ll see your user name, your password hidden, your country, and your phone number. Next you see the Messaging Options. In here you choose the life span of your text. You can choose five minutes to 30 days. Under that is the choice to Delete On Read, then Delete History. Beneath that you can see the software version. Hit save after choosing your settings.

Now you’re ready to create your text. Click the Compose New and create your text message. After clicking compose new, it will bring you to your contacts. You can choose which contact and number to text. Then you simply type your text and send. In the message in the inbox you’ll see the number you texted to, the first part of the message, and the time. The recipient must read the text within the time alloted or the text will self-destruct.

I tried texting quite a few friends with this and it worked like a charm, especially for those who didn’t bother checking till after the deadline. All in all, the app worked perfect, does what it says it will do. Now the only thing that SMS Eraser did was kept your message from being able to be saved. You could also make it self destruct after opening once or twice. There’s even a user guide that you can access that will have the faqs on how to use the application.

If you’re interested in an app that could keep your texts private and is free, then this app is for you. I’d like to know who else has tried the TigerText and what you think about it. It’s currently available for all devices. For me it was more for fun, I’m not so much a texter since I use email and BBM primarily, but it is a great feature for those who still text.

Check out the TigerText and let us know what you think.

The last time was over the Etisalat incident, the very one Smobile Systems had found and evaluated. This time it’s about data overseas and the inability to control where their laws aren’t applicable. Analysts are stating it could be difficult for authorities to monitor use because of this. Check it out…

I’ll go over briefly what happened last. Over a year ago the UAE state-owned mobile operator Etisalat told the company’s BlackBerry users (over 145,000 of them) to install software they deemed as an upgrade. The upgrade was required to bring service enhancements for supposed battery drain. But that wasn’t the case. It turns out that Etilasat had the assistance of a US -based software firm, SS8, which assists to monitor and prevent criminal activity. This led to a stealth application that could intercept communication. The “upgrade” turned out to be spyware which gave the ability for someone to access private information stored on the phones. The spyware could be activated by an email message. Once the command was sent and received, it would be deleted and the app would begin to listen for incoming email messages which it would intercept. But here’s what happened. At registration the app overloaded the registration server, causing it to shut down and battery life quickly diminished for the users. RIM quickly found the issue and addressed it by giving instructions to the users on how to remove the spyware.

According to an article from the readingeagle.com, Associated Press writer Adam Schreck wrote in detail about the situation. The UAE is a federation of seven heriditary states. They currently censor websites and media they believe is harmful to the national security and local values. Basically they say authorities don’t have access to information on a BlackBerry as they do for a local operator’s device.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority fears that the BlackBerry can manage data in a way that allows misuse. They are concerned that not only do the local laws not apply, but that they are managed by a foreign commercial organization. Really and truly what it boils down to is they don’t like the idea that users have the right to use their phones and ability to do so without worrying about the security of their own personal information. It must be a worry as they feel they needed to encourage the download of spyware to monitor it.

There are other countries who have shown concern as well including Bahrain and Indian government securities. One of their largest concerns is the BlackBerry Messenger which is even more of a challenge to monitor, more so than any types of communication. I don’t know about you, but I like knowing that the BlackBerry Messenger is secure. Many contractors and military personnel rely on the BBM overseas to keep in contact with their families and share photos and thoughts. Knowing their information isn’t easily accessed is a relief.

I suppose in a country where they have complete control over everything, including the way a woman dresses, the idea that they can’t monitor is the issue. Not that it’s a security risk because the only security risk they’ve had at this point is the one they themselves encouraged as an update. We should be thankful to live in a country where we can use our BlackBerry as we want, and able to communicate. It doesn’t make sense to me that they would consider the BlackBerry a threat to security when its one of the most if not the most secure device. RIM has stood by in defending its security. Its the one thing both consumers and enterprises embrace. Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions to share?

Tony, from Cocky Culture, let us know that he’s released a new premium theme, Tribal. Show the side you hide pain-free, no tatoo required. Completely original including the visuals, icons, and buttons, and wallpaper friendly. Cocky Culture has some of the most original themes to impress a variety of BlackBerry users.

Cocky Culture is innovative, the themes have a distinct look to them. From gothic to antique, to modern and wild. Tribal is another theme that brings it unique definition. Tribal is available in the BlackBerry Sync Store for $4.99. I love the way the clock sits in a circle with big numbers and the swirl coming down has four to six customizable icons. I love the way the profile or sound is hidden, the battery life is hidden as a white meter that is circled on the left half of the clock, the signal meter is the white around the clock on the right side. The icons are easily distinguishable and in black and white, in comparison to the yellow home screen. You can also change your wallpapers, and it doesn’t affect the theme. I’ve had quite the few Cocky Culture themes and I always look forward to the next one coming out because Cocky Culture themes are fast and stand out with their uniqueness.

First of all, the device is available for OS 4.6, 4.7, and 5.0.

Tribal is available for the following devices: 8350, 85xx, 89xx, 9000, 91xx, 95xx, 96xx, 97xx.

We know we take for granted what we’ve learned so well. But there are times that you get your first BlackBerry, whether it’s your first personal one or you’re changing carriers. One of the first things you’ll want to do is add your email. I’m going to give you two ways to do this.

After turning on your BlackBerry, the first things you’ll want to do is activate it. Follow the directions given by your carrier. The next thing you’ll do is you’ll go into the Options/Advanced Options/Host Routing Table, click the BlackBerry or Menu button and click Register Now. It’s that easy. Now to set up the email.

The first way is on the device. Click on the icon named Email Settings. It will ask you to agree to the terms and conditions, so you click I Agree. Next it will have a selection of emails. On the bottom of the list you should see the BlackBerry email option. Always add this one. It’s free and from your provider. In the set up, you choose your email user name, your password twice, your secret question and secret answer, and let you know if it’s available. The reason why I stress a BlackBerry Email address is because it’s native to the phone and some apps and stores will prefer the native account over the others. After you set this up, you’ll have the chance to add all your other personal email accounts you want to add. Remember, you can have 10 others besides the BlackBerry email. Also, if at any time there’s an outtage and your BlackBerry doesn’t recover email wise, this is the fix: Go to your Email Settings, Log in if necessary, and click the Menu button, go to Service Books and click. The next page will say Send Service Books and tells you what it’s for, click Send Service Books. All your emails from that point on will be restored once the service books are sent.

The other way is going on line to a computer. You can find your carrier’s BIS email site, to find it is easy. You can ask your carrier for the site or it’s as easy as you typing your carrier and BlackBerry email in Google and search. Such as AT&T BlackBerry Email. You simply find which one is the BIS service, and click. You’ll see the page on the top, and you click the Create New Account button. The next page you’ll see is this.

This is where you agree to the terms and conditions. Check the box and click I Agree. The next page will be this.

The pin and the EMEI need to be entered so the email can be set for the device. This step is skipped on the BlackBerry device because it has that information. It even tells you where to find the pin and EMEI. The next page to load will be the most popular emails to choose from and at the bottom will be “Create BlackBerry Email”. I recommend setting up your BlackBerry email which will ask you what you want for your user name, your password twice, the secret question and secret answer and will let you know if it’s available. Then you can add your other emails. You can also send your service books from the online site as well.

Here’s another tip. For those of us on BIS and purchased a newer device with 5.0 on the phone, if you add a Gmail or Yahoo account you’ll see the contacts with a check box. If you check it, email setup will sync your contacts. It will show an icon while in the process that shows like a BES activation in process. No, you haven’t chosen the BES option, it’s that the BIS is now syncing your contacts and the icon will disappear when finished. If you don’t want your contacts synced, simply uncheck the box. This is especially a great feature for those of us who use Gmail or for those of us who are changing devices from an Android device to a BlackBerry device as your contacts will come across to the BlackBerry.

I prefer setting it up from the phone, but others prefer the online way, and it’s clearly what you prefer. Your emails can be moved to other devices unless you switch carriers. If you switch carriers, you’ll have to start all over. Also, if you have the new BBM tied to your emails as backup, you have the advantage of keeping your contacts once you sign in after setting up your emails or moving them.

I’d like to know what way we prefer setting up our email? Did you set it up on the device or pc? For newbies, it’s not difficult at all.

Oh dear whats this? Another un-released BlackBerry has been leaked on to the internet. This time it seems to be the slight upgrade to the Bold 9700, which will feature a slightly darker bezel around the body and 512MB of flash RAM. Other than that the Bold 9780 (as its being modeled currently) will be running BlackBerry 6 (OS 6.0), and will NOT have a touchscreen. So it seems that the rumors of the current Bold 9700 not be able to run BlackBerry 6 in full could be be true. How do you feel about this?
